The Ternasii Reserve

The Ternavasii Hunting Reserve is a wildlife and hunting reserve located in the municipality of Poirino, in the province of Turin, Piedmont. It spans an area of approximately 1,400 hectares, also including the neighboring municipalities of Pralormo, Carmagnola, and Ceresole d'Alba. With an altitude varying between 250 and 400 meters above sea level, the territory features gentle hills, flat areas, woodlands, wetlands, meadows, and cultivated fields with fertile and well-drained soils, ideal for raising wild game.

Habitat and Environmental Management

The Reserve is fenced to protect the wildlife raised and managed according to the regulations of the Piedmont Region.
It offers a mosaic of habitats: woods, meadows, ponds, hedges, and agricultural areas. The open areas and fenced meadows are used for the controlled breeding of game, maintaining a balance between hunting and environmental conservation. Ponds and waterways encourage the presence of waterfowl and amphibians, increasing biodiversity.

Hunting for 900 Years

Already mentioned in a papal bull by Innocent II in 1141, the hunting grounds and the adjacent village belonged to the noble Ternavasii of Carmagnola for centuries. Today, Count Tahon di Revel and his family guard this historic estate.

Between history and nature

The reserve's territory is characterized by a landscape rich in history and nature. At its center lies an ancient castle dating back to the 14th century, which was partially destroyed during the Battle of Ceresole in 1544. Beside the castle stands an 18th-century hunting lodge, still owned by the Thaon di Revel family.

The "Hunter King"

Victor Emmanuel II was nicknamed "the Hunter King" due to his intense passion for hunting from a young age and throughout his reign, making it a distinguishing characteristic of his persona. The King loved to hunt in the territories of the Ternavasii Reserve.
